Xnext took part in Ecomondo, the leading event in Europe for the green and circular economy. The expo took place in Rimini, Italy from 5 to 8 November 2019. It brought together all sectors of the circular economy, from material and energy recovery to sustainable development.

Invited by EASME – the European Commission’s Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises – Xnext had the opportunity to present its contribution to a better circular world!

During the conference organised by the European Commission, “Supporting actions to mitigate Food Waste”, Bruno Garavelli, Xnext’s CEO and co-inventor of XSpectraÒ, explained the functioning and the specificity of the technology and its impact on the entire life cycle of products with the goal of improving the efficiency and use of resources.

XNEXT AT ECOMONDO (RIMINI, 7-8 NOVEMBER 2019): FOOD SAFETY AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY - Xspectra ecomondo1

Combating food waste is a responsibility of all actors in the food chain, ranging from those who produce and process food to those who make it available for consumption and ultimately consumers themselves”.

Food waste prevention is central to building a circular economy and a sustainable society. First, because the food industry is one of the most energy-intensive industries; second, because most countries in the world are experiencing significant population growth, which contributes to similar growth in the food industry. There are undoubtedly many reasons for food waste, and it can occur at every stage of the food-supply chain. One of the reasons is certainly the lack of technologies capable of both accurately evaluating food safety and allowing for more efficient production process.

Xnext has developed XSpectra®, a new generation of X-ray inspection systems, which can detect both low- and high-density foreign bodies, overcoming the shortcomings of conventional X-ray machines and thus reducing considerably the amount of food waste and energy loss

The problemPart of the solution
In the EU, around 88 million tonnes of food waste are generated annually with associated costs estimated at 143 billion euros and generating about 8% of Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions.   Let’s take a simple, but emblematic example: the withdrawal of a single jar of tomato of 125g generates a waste of 225L of water and 1,5kg of CO2.    XSpectra® is a win-win-win situation: for the consumers, for the food manufacturers and ultimately for the environment.   Reducing food waste and better supply chains are perhaps small pieces in a big puzzle, but, together, they showcase how innovative technologies and practices can pave the way for a wider change in sustainability.

At the EU stand, Xnext had also the chance to present in detail the XSpectra project and explain to what extent an innovative solution such as XSpectra® can contribute to a new model of circular economy. Like no other technology currently available, XSpectra performs an analysis of the physical and chemical properties of the product. It is like getting the fingerprint of the material inspected. Thanks to its unique properties, XSpectraÒ can therefore be used in many sectors: food, waste and material recycling, pharmaceutics, metallurgy, plastics and composites, electronics, clothing, shoes, biomedical, extraction industry, security controls etc.

From 27 October to 2 November 2019, Xnext took part in Manchester, UK, in the IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium (NSS) and Medical Imaging Conference (MIC), and the International Symposium on Room Temperature Semiconductor Detectors (RTSD).

This joint conference is the leading annual international meeting for all scientists, engineers, researchers, medical physicists and students with an interest in radiation detectors, related technologies and their applications. Exciting developments and new directions are emerging in many areas of our field.

From a scientific perspective

The event provided an exceptional opportunity for Xnext to share along with its main scientific partners, Polytechnic University of Milan (PoliMI) and IMEM – The National Research Council (CNR), its most recent research results.

During one speaker session, Xnext had the opportunity to present its patented innovation, XSpectra®, and explain scientifically why it makes the difference in the X-ray inspection technology. Its unique performance makes it an absolute must-have solution for mulltiple industries, ranging from quality control to material recycling, passing through security controls, and much more.

XNEXT AT THE 2019 IEEE NUCLEAR SCIENCE SYMPOSIUM AND MEDICAL IMAGING CONFERENCE (27 OCT.-2 NOV. 2019, MANCHESTER, UK) - Xspectra specific perspective

The presentation gave particular emphasis on the application of Xspectra® in the field of real-time detection of contaminants in food products on production lines. While describing the technology architecture, it outlined the raison d’être of the Horizon 2020 XSpectra project.

From a commercial perspective

Other than scientific dissemination, the international conference gave Xnext the possibility to showcase its product, XSpectra®, and thus gain visibility, while networking with an international group of major scientists, engineers and suppliers of radiation instrumentation.
